Sciences in Creole Language 2024

After the “Reduction of Natural Hazards in 2023 “, the theme addressed for this new edition is:

Dlo lapli nan kontèks chanjman klimatik

(Rainwater in the context of climate change)

With our special guests:

  • Aïda Diongue-Niang (Senegal), PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorologist and Vice-Chair of IPCC Working Group I for the Seventh Assessment Cycle.
  • Raphaël Confiant (Martinique), Professor Emeritus in Regional Language and Culture, internationally renowned writer, translator and defender of the Creole language, and campaigner for teaching science in Creole and particularly astronomy.

Dr. Diongue-Niang will discuss rains and floods in West Africa in relation to climate change. Prof. Confiant will have carte blanche to explain his vision of science in Creole.

The seven other speakers will address the issues of rains from their observations, measurements, uses, cycles, consequences in tropical island zones, and popularization of their risks. The participants’ questions will allow us to ensure that the subtleties and poetics of Creole facilitate the transmission of knowledge and the acquisition of concepts.

We warmly invite you to this web conference on Friday, October 25, 2024, between 9:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti time), and we kindly ask you to spread this invitation as widely as possible among Creole speakers and those curious about this language.
